The Sibaya Lake (English Lake Sibaya or Lake Sibhayi ) is the largest natural freshwater lake in South Africa .
description
The lake is located in KwaZulu-Natal around 45 kilometers from the border with Mozambique . It is separated from the sea by a strip two kilometers wide.
Presumably the lake originated from a lagoon , which was separated from the sea by sand deposits.
Flora and fauna
There are larger populations of hippos and crocodiles in the lake . 279 bird species were counted in and around the lake, 60 of them breeding there. There are also 22 species of frogs and eight species of reptiles. The “climbing” orchid Vanilla roscheri is only found there in South Africa; the copepod Tropocylops brevis is endemic here .
