Vanilla roscheri is a species of orchid from the genus Vanilla . It occurs in South Africa , East Africa and Zanzibar . The art epithet honors the German Africa explorer Albrecht Roscher .

features

Vanilla roscheri is a leafless, climbing and creeping orchid of indeterminate height and a diameter of up to 20 mm. The greenish-brown, cylindrical stems are juicy and fleshy. The 30 cm long, unbranched inflorescences are terminal or axillary. The flowers are white with a white lip and a deep pink calyx. They have a strong, sweet scent. Ovaries and flower stalks are short, initially erect and later elongated. The lanceolate, elongated sepals are 80 mm long. The petals are 80 mm long, 38 mm wide, elliptical-oblong or egg-shaped and prickly. The lip is 80 mm long, 45 mm wide and funnel-shaped. The lip rims are fused at the base to form a 20 mm long stylus column. The tubular flower has two rows with lobed crowns 4 mm high. A small crown of up to 15 mm in length is composed of two rows of finger-shaped lamellae and grows between the main crowns at the base. The stylus column is 2.5 cm long, the fruit capsule is 17.5 cm long and 7.5 mm wide.

Distribution area

The distribution area extends from southwest Ethiopia and Kenya over the coast of Tanzania , further over Zanzibar , Mozambique ( Inhambane , Pomene , the north coast of the Maputo Bay , Dondo Forest) to South Africa , where the species only from Sibaya Lake within the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Parks is known. The very closely related species Vanilla phalaenopsis is native to the Seychelles .

Habitat and Ecology

Vanilla roscheri grows on coastal bushland , in mangrove swamps, on open, evergreen bush and woodland as well as on grassland with isolated trees between 1 and 100 m above sea level. Evidence from Lake Sibaya was from the edge of a forest area near the lake shore. The flowering time is in January. As pollinators act among other butterflies from the family moth (Sphingidae).

status

The exact population is unknown. In South Africa the species is considered rare and is listed in the category “ data deficient ” . The main threats come from deforestation, fires, traditional medicine and orchid collectors.
