The program is about a mixed group of American and Russian forest workers, around their boss Sean Vann, who want to make their fortune in the Siberian forests. The American Vann worked in Siberia as a lumberjack for 17 years. He now decides to start his own business there and flies to his old home in Montana to look for well-trained forest workers who want to work for him in Russia . Since the logging industry in the USA has been increasingly shattered since the 1980s, four men finally join him and fly to Siberia. But the disillusionment with easy money sets in when they are quartered in a completely desolate accommodation on their arrival and have to struggle with the arctic cold climate. When they are picked up by Vann the next day, they are introduced to the other forest workers; a group consisting of three Russians, including a mechanic. After initial skepticism on both sides, language barriers, internal disputes and different ways of working, a well-coordinated team is slowly forming. It is a supposedly lucrative order from a forest landowner, a former Soviet colonel, to pull ashore.

To do this, the team first has to fell a test plot of land to prove their quality of work, in order to be allocated a larger area for felling after successful completion. The estimated total value of the entire forest area is the equivalent of US $ 500,000, of which Sean and his team could earn a quarter. But there are increasing problems with the logistics, infrastructure, roads, the schedule, the machines, the renaturation requirements and the weather conditions, as spring is approaching and thus gradually ushering in the end of the timber harvesting season, as everything threatens to sink into mud. When, after some delay, they have finally worked through the test site and their share in the harvested wood is due, the group learns that the forest owner is now bankrupt and they cannot pay out. The entire company threatens to fail because Vann cannot pay his men and the operating costs. In return, Colonel a. D. however, to keep the entire profit of the new section. The team decided to take this opportunity so that they do not return to their homeland empty-handed. If the team manages to cut 1000 cubic meters of wood and have it transported away, each team member's salary plus bonus would be in it. But it is a battle against time, as it is getting warmer and warmer and the transport of the logs on the muddy roads is becoming more and more difficult. Since ultimately no willing truck drivers can be found for transport to the sawmills - for fear of getting stuck - the team now decides to leave without having reached their destination.

When they finally arrive in the nearest village Novochernorechenski - where their accommodation is also - they wait and repair the machines and vehicles in order to mothball them. Meanwhile, Vann tries to find a buyer for the more than 800 cubic meters of wood at the local lumber yard, worth the equivalent of 50,000 US dollars, and to sell the old Russian felling bundler in order to still get the promised bonus for the team. Due to the delivery problems, the team had to leave behind wood worth the equivalent of 20,000 US dollars, which would have made up the bonus. To the displeasure of the team, the first prospective buyer for the thirty-year-old machine jumps off at short notice, and so he has to turn to a second in the more distant Lesosibirsk, the previous owner, who, however, only pays half of the proposed 40,000 dollars due to its poor condition. Before that, the Russian team member Ruslan managed to sell the felled wood to a Chinese dealer at full price after a few back and forth. In the meantime, the team's displeasure with their boss Vann is boiling up, as they are only afraid of getting the regular wages, which the Americans in particular could have earned at home under better and easier conditions. But shortly before the American team members leave and say goodbye to their beloved Russian colleagues, Vann arrives with the bonus and shares it with his team. Finally, after three months of working together, the group separates and decides to stay in touch and work together in the future.
