Basic safety training and instruction for seafarers
The basic safety training and instruction for seafarers (also Basic Safety Training ) is a safety training for seafarers and a prerequisite for the exercise of the profession as a sailor in Germany. Every prospective seaman who, in accordance with the STCW regulations, pursues a ship-related activity or takes on duties on board, as well as service personnel on cruise ships, must complete such safety training before the first sailing time.
It is regulated in Section 44 of the Seafarers' Qualification Ordinance.
requirements
Proof of valid fitness for sea service is required for work on board . This can be issued in Hamburg, Bremen or Lübeck. However, there are many more locations. It includes an eye test, hearing test and proof of general physical fitness.

Training locations
The safety training is offered at different locations in Germany , but despite STCW conformity, the training content and course duration can vary considerably from location to location. The number of participants also depends on the course provider and ranges from 10 to 30 people per teaching unit. The current dates of the various providers can be found in the maritime training pilot.
Duration
The Basic Safety Training is regulated to a minimum of 80 hours and includes all of the above training points. Practice time for the individual proof of performance to be provided at the end of the training is not included. In some cases, the course-specific STCW minimum requirements are set significantly higher by some providers in order to meet additional cooperative-specific requirements, such as those of BG Verkehr, for example. For service personnel on cruise ships, there is the option of completing a compressed safety training course, which is also expanded to include a vessel sanitation program .
