As siderophages be macrophages referred to hemosiderin , a breakdown product of the blood pigment hemoglobin , phagocytosis have. The histological or cytological detection of siderophages is of diagnostic importance in pathology as an indication of older hemorrhages. They are also found in the lung alveoli as so-called "heart defect cells" in chronic pulmonary congestion, e.g. B. in the context of a chronic left heart failure .
