Sidi Barrani

Sidi Barrani ( Arabic سيدي برّاني, DMG Sīdī Barrānī ) is a small community in the north-western part of Egypt . The place is named after Sidi es-Saadi el Barrani , a sheikh of the Senussi , who was a head of this district, his Zawiya . Today the place is mainly a Bedouin town with no significant economic or tourist development.

Sidi Barrani is best known for the fighting during the Africa campaign , during which the place was captured by Italian troops on September 16, 1940, but was recaptured by British units on December 10 and 11. In 1942 the place changed hands twice.
