The Siebold House

The Siebold House ( Dutch SieboldHuis ) is a museum on the Rapenburg Canal in Leiden in the Netherlands. It is named after the doctor and Japan researcher Philipp Franz von Siebold , who lived there from 1832 to 1838. Today, part of his extensive collection that he brought from Japan is shown in the house. The other rooms are used for temporary exhibitions related to Japan. The stately house is owned by the state (Rijksgebouwendienst).

To the museum

Siebold, who worked as a doctor at the Dutch trading post Dejima in Nagasaki from 1823 to 1829 , was interested in all aspects of Japanese society and nature. Over the years he brought together an extensive collection that he took back to the Netherlands. The collection is located in the Reichsmuseum für Völkerkunde in Leiden, and a small selection can be seen in the Siebold House: maps, books, prepared land and sea animals, dried plants, rocks, everyday objects and art objects such as lacquerware and porcelain.

For several years now, Siebold-Haus has been organizing the “Japanese Market” on Rapenburg-Gracht every spring. All kinds of Japanese items are exhibited and sold in this market. There are also various activities such as music performances and cosplay on the occasion .

In 2012 this house was the model for the 93rd building of the “ Delft Blue Houses Series ” of the airline KLM.
