"Auf dem Sande" settlement
The settlement "Auf dem Sande" is a workers' housing estate in Luckenwalde from the early 20th century.
The settlement was built around two kilometers southwest of the city center between 1919 and 1930 on the initiative of the then city building councilor Josef Bischof .
The architects were Josef Bischof, Hans Graf and Bruno Langkeit . Other sources also mention Richard Neutra . Plans for the settlement are also said to come from Willi Ludewig . The builders were the city and non-profit housing companies.
Today's Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse (then Treuenbrietzener Strasse), the Schieferling and the Jüterboger Tor delimit the settlement, which is now the largest in the city.
The aim of the planning of this settlement was to create contemporary and healthy living space for needy working-class families while still allowing different sections of the population (civil servants, employees, workers) to live together.
Until 1922, during the first construction phase, the design was based on the model of a garden city , with the smallest possible buildings and the construction of a central axis with flanking gate situations. So almost exclusively terraced houses or small one- and two-family houses with adjoining garden plots were built.
In a second construction phase, however, the settlement concept with rental apartments in multi-storey construction was more in focus, which, from 1924, is represented by more open block and row development.
A total of 456 residential units were created; elsewhere there are 225 apartments. In addition to single-family houses and multi-storey buildings, wooden barracks were built, but the latter were demolished around 1970.
Since the early 1990s, the entire village is under monument protection and is now a registered monument . Objects in the streets Auf dem Sande, Alex-Sailer-Straße, An den Giebeln, Grundweg, Jüterboger Tor, Rothe Straße, Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße and Schieferling are under this protection.
