Alt-Frankenforst settlement
The Alt-Frankenforst settlement , a housing estate committed to the idea of the garden city movement , has been a listed area of the city of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) since 1995 .
History and description
The settlement essentially has the characteristics of comparable villa colonies in Germany. It is a typical example of the social and urban development of the time before the First World War and was founded by a commercial company with the purpose of profitable resale. The decisive factor was the convenient transport links and the closer relationship between Cologne and the rural community of Bensberg. The clients were looking for inexpensive building land in a forest in order to be able to raise the children healthily. Growing fruit and vegetables as well as keeping small livestock were widespread. A settlement for people from the big city was planned, which corresponded to the big city level. Electricity and gas supply and the connection to the sewage system had to be guaranteed.
The settlement lies at the foot of a chain of hills between Refrath and Bensberg in the Frankenforst forest area and was laid out in 1908 by the Cologne-based construction company Waldhaus-Villenkolonie Frankenforst according to an overall plan by Jean Klein and developed until the end of the 1920s. It is a significant example of a park-like settlement laid out according to a uniform plan that upholds the idea of the garden city movement. The residential area is a preferred and expensive residential area with spacious parceled plots and park-like gardens.
The construction company had its headquarters in Cologne and a branch in the colony in the Villa Eugenia. She acquired 337 acres by 1909 and from 1910 offered land at moderate prices for the purpose of villa-like development. It was decided to continue the electric suburban railway through Frankenforst. The company made the site available to the railway free of charge and committed itself to partially assuming the operating costs.
The area is cut at right angles, it is bounded in the northeast by the Bergisch Gladbach / Cologne railway line and in the southeast by the Cologne / Bensberg railway line. From an elongated square, which forms the center of the settlement, straight paths, curved in a semicircle to the south, with short connecting pieces. Crossroads and road junctions are designed as oval or semi-oval squares with green spaces. The streets are the same width, some old trees are still preserved. Some streets are named after the predominantly planted tree species. An originally planned pond was not built, instead a green area was created.
