from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegbert Witkowski (born October 30, 1927 ) is a German physicist who deals with the applications of lasers in plasma physics.

Witkowski made his diploma in physics at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel in 1954 and received his doctorate in 1958. At that time he was dealing with plasmas from arcing . 1966/67 he was a professor at the Space Institute at the University of Tennessee . From 1970 he was a member of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching. Witkowski was a founding member of the Max Planck Group for Laser Research at the then Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in 1976 and one of the three founding directors at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in 1981 . There he headed the laser plasmas department until his retirement in 1993.
