In signet ring carcinoma is mucus-producing adenocarcinomas , that is to malignant tumors of glands . The tumor cells are characterized by the production and accumulation of large amounts of mucus, which pushes the cell nuclei to the edge. When viewed under a microscope , this gives these cells a resemblance to a signet ring . This particular morphology gave the signet ring carcinomas or the signet ring cells their name. The cell contents of the tumor cells can be colored deep red by the PAS staining .

Signet ring carcinomas can occur in all glands in the body, that is, in the mucous membrane of the digestive and respiratory tract and the female sexual organs and in the glands of the liver , kidneys and other endocrine and exocrine glands. Signet ring carcinomas are preferred in the stomach . Other adenocarcinomas that produce mucus are so-called mucinous carcinomas .
