The Siemens Combino Duo is a series of tram cars that can be operated via the catenary as well as via a diesel generator ( two-power locomotive ) and are derived from the Combino . So far, only three vehicles of this type have been delivered to the Nordhausen tram , where they were given the numbers 201-203. The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways assigned these vehicles the numbers 187 201 to 203 (only used internally).

Since both the Nordhausen tram and the Harzquerbahn have a gauge of 1000 mm and run only a few meters apart at Nordhausen Nord station, there were early plans to connect the two railway lines. After the reunification of Germany, concrete plans finally arose to build a connecting track between the “Hauptbahnhof” tram stop and Nordhausen Nord train station. In 1999 HSB and Stadtwerke Nordhausen signed a letter of intent to establish the track connection to the 2004 State Garden Show.

Since the HSB line is not electrified and a decision was made against the construction of the contact line, the Nordhausen public utility initially carried out test drives with a converted GT4 tram known as the “Twino” . This car was presented to the public on the 100th anniversary of the Stadtwerke in 2000. With this car, the possibility of dual-power operation was tested in practice.

In 2002, the construction work began to prepare the track connection, Stadtwerke decided upon successful completion of sea trials with the "Twino" for a new order of three bi-directional motor coaches of the type Combino of which were procured for the tram lines Since 1999, seven vehicles. In order to be able to use the non-electrified tracks of the Harzquerbahn, the cars were fitted with a BMW diesel engine in the middle section between the doors. In conjunction with a flange-mounted generator, this generates the electricity for the traction motors and auxiliary systems of the railcar. The manufacturer Siemens gave this series the name "Combino Duo".

Due to the space required by the diesel unit, the railcars with 27 seats and 68 standing places offer significantly less space than the single-system vehicles of the same size on the Nordhausen tram (41/67 or 34/68 places). The maximum speed is 70 km / h. However, this cannot be extended on the routes traveled, as both the tram network and the HSB only allow 50 km / h.

With the construction of the connecting track in Nordhausen, the new line 10 of the Nordhausen tram from the hospital in Nordhausen via the train station and the HSB line to the Neander Clinic in Ilfeld was opened on May 1, 2004 . On weekdays this line runs about every hour, on weekends it runs every two hours. Between these trips, HSB railcars run from Ilfeld to the station forecourt in Nordhausen. The locomotive hauled trains of the HSB return to the neighboring Nordhausen Nord station.
