from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the Siemens PC 16-10 , Siemens first offered a 16-bit class personal computer at the end of 1983 . However, this was not IBM-compatible and ran under the CP / M -86 operating system .

hardware

The PC system consisted of a robust housing with a separate monitor and keyboard in connection with a printer. Apart from a different front, Siemens took over the existing housing of the PG675 programming device, which was used to program the Siemens SIMATIC S5 PLC series , with dimensions (H × W × D) 211 mm × 440 mm × 337 mm for the sake of simplicity and a weight of approx. 11 kg. A CPU of the type Intel 8088 worked in the PC with a clock frequency of 4.1 MHz. In the basic version it had 128 kB of working memory , which could be upgraded in 128 kB steps to a maximum of 512 kB. One or two drives in half the height (slimline) for 5.25 ″ floppy disks with a storage capacity of 360 kB were installed vertically.

The keyboard, with the dimensions (H × W × D) 63 mm × 500 mm × 250 mm, was ergonomically designed and, in addition to the text block, had a separate block for cursor control, a separate numeric block and 16 function keys. It was connected via a serial interface with a 20 mA current loop.

The 12-inch (31 cm) screen was rotatable and tiltable both forwards and backwards. It had a green glowing picture tube with an anti-reflective coating and displayed 25 lines x 80 letters in an 11 x 7 dot matrix.

The Siemens PT88 printer could be selected as a matrix printer or as an ink printer.

software

The PC 16-10 ran under the CP / M-86 operating system. Siemens also offered Concurrent CP / M and the graphics extension GSX-86. In addition to assembler, several BASIC dialects, Fortran 77, Cobol , Pascal / MT 86 and C were available as programming languages. WordStar word processing and products from the American software company Chang Labs, word processing and calculation, were offered, as well as emulation programs for communication with Siemens and IBM mainframes .

Others

The starting price for a complete system including the PT88 printer was about DM 11,300. An extended model with a floppy disk drive and a hard disk with a capacity of 10 MB was also offered.
