history

Until 1945

The Siemens group founded a branch in Dresden in Prager Strasse in 1903. Their small offices soon no longer met the requirements, so they moved to Wiener Platz and later to Devrientstrasse. Siemens acquired the property at Sidonienstraße 18 for a new building. On the property there was an older, small commercial building, whose users were in the alcohol-free restaurants and the restaurant Zur Weißen Runde in 1928 and the offices of the Romanian consulate in 1929 . The new office building for the Siemens group was built according to plans from Paul Wolf's architectural office . It is a large rectangular building with 4 floors and a converted attic. The storage rooms and workshops were located in the basement. The monolithic building had 15 window axes on the street front and 3 on each gable side. The stairwell is on the 6th left axis next to the main entrance on the courtyard side. Small sculptural decorative elements adorn the simple building with a plastered facade. By changing the use of electrical energy from direct current to three-phase current, the output volume increased enormously. The production of electric drive and prime movers required a greater effort. Additional workshops were set up in Dresden to compensate.

After 1945

The city was badly damaged by the air raids on Dresden in 1945. No buildings on Wiener Platz remained intact. The Siemens house was badly damaged and burned down up to the third floor. The first security measures and the reconstruction of the building began at the end of 1945. The Siemens concern was expropriated with the order number 142 of October 30, 1945 of the Soviet military administration and commander in chief of the group of the Soviet occupation troops in Germany and declared to the public property. On January 1, 1949, united the operating parts of the electrical engineering for the combination of state-owned enterprises of electrical engineering in the expenditure incurred in July 1948 Association with headquarters in Leipzig. In 1953 the two companies Otto-Buchwitz-Werk and VEM Starkstrom-Anlagenbau were merged to form VEB Starkstrom-Anlagenbau Dresden . The administration and assembly warehouse now remained in Siemenshaus Sidonienstraße 18. The company VEB Starkstrom-Anlagenbau Dresden was restructured and enlarged to become VEB Elektromaschinenbau in the 1970s. Until 1980, the Siemeshaus was required by the combine as a branch for data processing and organization. Few offices in the building were still in use around 1990. In the 1960s, some conservation measures were carried out. The sanitary facilities were also renovated. However, no further maintenance work was carried out and the building was left to decay. Nonetheless, some rooms in the building were also used by third parties: From around 1980, the “Office for City Traffic”, a subordinate facility of the then Dresden City Council, had its seat in the building. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and its dissolution or integration as the traffic planning department in the now urban planning office of the city of Dresden, these rooms were finally given up in 1992.

From 2020

After 75 years now, Wiener Platz - Ost is to be rebuilt. Two buildings that survived the bombing inferno are protected as existing, the Siemenshaus and the former management building of the Reichsbahn . The company Immopact Sidonien GmbH & CoKG became the new owner of Siemenshaus and wants to renovate it and use it as an office building. The first work has now started.
