Siemomysł

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siemomysł (or Ziemomysł ) was a legendary prince in Poland in the 10th century . Its historical existence is uncertain. As the son of Lestek, he came from the Piast family .

Life

Siemomysł was only mentioned in the Gesta principum Polonorum of Gallus Anonymus . Since he was not mentioned in any other written source of his time, it is uncertain whether he existed as a person. He was reportedly a son of Lestek and a descendant of Piast .

Siemomysł was the father of Prince Mieszko I called. This was the first historically verifiable ruler in Greater Poland . In Polish history there is great uncertainty as to whether Siemomysł existed as a person. Most authors assume its existence, such as Henryk Łowmiański, Gerard Labuda and Kazimierz Jasiński. Before 963 Mieszko had taken over (or conquered?) A dominion in the area around Poznan and Gniezno , which already existed. Some castles from this period are known to be archaeological.

It has been suggested that Siemomysł was also the father of Czcibor , a historically mentioned brother of Mieszko, and another brother whose name is not known. In historical research, assumptions have been made about wives and other descendants, for example that a wife's name was Gorka .

In 1046 a Duke Zemuzil was mentioned in Pomerania . It is not clear whether this was a descendant of Siemomysł.

The name Siemomysl is related to various names of the Bohemian Přemyslids (see also Przemyśl Castle ). Today it is mostly interpreted as coming from the Slavic siemia family and mysl thought .
