The Sierra de las Minas is a 130 km long and 30 km wide mountain range in eastern Guatemala . It extends in a west-east direction over 4,274 km² between the Río Polochic in the north and the Río Motagua in the south and Lake Izabal in the east. It reaches its highest point in Cerro Raxón at 3,015 m . The border between the departments of Izabal , Zacapa and El Progreso runs along the main ridge , in the west the foothills extend to Baja Verapaz .
A large part of the Sierra de las Minas is under nature protection ( biosphere reserve ), the establishment of a national park is planned.
