Sigmund Holbein (* around 1470 probably in Augsburg ; † before November 18, 1540 in Bern ) was a German painter .

Life

Sigmund Holbein was the younger brother of Hans Holbein the Elder. Ä. , in whose workshop he worked until around 1517. He is believed to be the so-called "Master of the (Nuremberg) Apostle Mysteries", the creator of an altar from the Holbein workshop, most of which were lost in the Second World War . After his older brother left Augsburg, he continued to run his workshop, but could no longer build on their earlier successes. He did not succeed in breaking out of the shadow of his important brother.

None of his works are signed or secured by documents, so that his possible oeuvre is only based on a style-critical point of view. According to Ernst Buchner, the basis for this were elements in the works of Hans Holbein the Elder. Ä. and his workshop, which were “harder and more precise in designing and drier in coloring” than in his own. In one of these works, an offering in the temple , the figure of Joseph looks so vividly at another figure that one has to mistake it for a self-portrait of the painter. This figure in turn resembles the only documented representation of Sigmund in a drawing by Hans Holbein the Elder. Ä. in the British Museum in London .
