Sigmund Livingston
Sigmund Livingston ( December 27, 1872 in Giessen - June 13, 1946 in Highland Park, Illinois ) was an American lawyer.
Life
He was the youngest child of Meyer Löwenstein (1839–1915) and Susel “Dusschen” Blumenfeld (1848– around 1927 in Bloomington). The family of his grandfather Hirsch Löwenstein (1808–1886) had moved from Ruttershausen to Daubringen in 1810.
His family emigrated to Bloomington, Illinois , in 1881 , where they were naturalized seven years later and called themselves Livingston . His mother took the name Dorah .
In 1894 Sigmund Livingston graduated from Illinois Wesleyan Law School and worked as a lawyer in Bloomington with fellow student William R. Bach as a partner. He was also the organizer of the Bloomington Bar Association . Livingston joined the local B'nai-B'rith lodge and looked at how to counter racial and religious hatred. In the period 1906–1910 he founded the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith , of which he was chairman for over three decades. In 1925 the board of directors included Moses Strauss, Max Pam, Boris D. Bogen, Sigmund Livingston, Alfred M. Cohen, David Philipson and Leonard Freiberg. He moved into the Livingston Building completed in 1903 by his uncle Ike Livingston, who died in 1916, and was a partner at Sterling, Livingston & Whitmore from 1916 to 1919 .
In December 1918 he married Hilda Valerie Freiler from Illinois. They lived in Hubbard Woods with their son Richard Mayer.
After moving to Chicago in 1929, he became a partner of Lederer, Livingston, Kahn and Adler (now Irnstein & Lehr, LLP ). He was a member of the North Shore Congregation Israel , the American and Chicago Bar Associations, and the Northmoor Country Club .
