history
Ordering and commissioning
The 20 series was developed in the mid-1970s and was the first Belgian locomotive whose traction motors were controlled by thyristors . This technology had not previously been used in direct current locomotives. The first order of the 20 series consisted of 15 units and was soon increased by 10 more locomotives to 25.
The introduction of the new technology took place without prototypes and initially caused frequent operational disruptions, which led to the fact that class 29 locomotives that had since been decommissioned were reactivated. For a short time, the locomotives also made journeys on the cross-border route to Aachen Hauptbahnhof , which on the German section of the route is equipped with a German-style overhead contact line with a Belgian power system. During these trips it turned out that the pantographs of the 20 series were not compatible with the German overhead contact line, so their use on German territory was stopped.
Regular operation
In later years of operation, the series was used in front of trains with M5 cars , international passenger trains to Luxembourg, and freight trains to and from Antwerp . Their comparatively high performance had a positive effect on these missions. The experiences with the 20 series were used for the construction of the 13 , 21 and 27 series . Regular operation of the 20 series ended in 2013.
