As M5 cars are coaches of the NMBS / SNCB designated manufactured from 1984 to 1987. There are three variants of the M5 cars: M5 A designates first class cars, M5 B second class cars and M5 BDx the control cars, which also lead the second class and also have a multi-purpose compartment.

history

In order to cope with the high capacity utilization on important lines during rush hour while maintaining the previous train length, the M5 double-deck coaches were ordered and delivered between 1986 and 1987. Use in push-pull trains was possible from the start. The M5 cars are mainly used in combination with class 21 and class 27 locomotives ; In the past, however, series 15 and series 20 locomotives were also used, although these locomotives did not have push-pull control.

The M5 cars were unpopular with passengers due to their low level of comfort. Therefore, between 2008 and 2011, Bombardier modernized. The color scheme of the cars was adapted to the current design of the NMBS / SNCB, air conditioning, automatic doors and new windows were installed and the lighting in the interior was replaced. The benches were also removed and replaced with individual seating, with 2 + 1 seating now in the upper deck in both the first and the second carriage class.
