Signal Tower Museum

The Signal Tower Museum is a former residential building and now a museum in the Scottish town of Arbroath in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. In addition, together with the Bell Rock Lighthouse , it forms a category A monument ensemble.

history

In 1811 the difficult construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse , which is about 19 kilometers from Arbroath in the North Sea , was completed. As usual, remote lighthouses in Scotland were operated by rotating lighthouse keepers who lived with their families in nearby buildings. Today's Signal Tower Museum was built in 1813 to accommodate the Bell Rock Lighthouse tower keeper families. The name refers to a flagpole on the roof of his tower, which is equipped with a copper ball. An identical construction was on the lighthouse. Every morning the lighthouse keeper communicated with his colleague on land by pulling up the globe. This meant that there were no problems. In the 1950s the families moved into a building in Edinburgh . The lighthouse has been automated since 1988.

From 1955 the city of Arbroath used the building before a museum was opened there in 1974. It deals with the history of Arbroath and the Bell Roch Lighthouse.

description

The Signal Tower Museum is on the North Sea coast at the port of Arbroath. The three-story building is designed in a classical style. The round tower, divided into four sections, which grows from a hipped roof of the residential building, is striking . There is a Doric portal at its foot . Its windows are set into round-arched openings. The frieze below the final crenellated reinforcement is designed with quatrefoils . The signal mast is still on the tower today.
