Various types of whistles and flutes are used as signal whistles , with which relatively loud and easily audible tones can be produced with little effort.

In addition to the widely used whistles , boatswain's whistles are used in the navy and for communication with animals, high-frequency whistles in the ultrasonic range.

In the military, the infantry used flute instruments such as the Schwegel or drum whistle and drums as signaling instruments. Signal horns for the cavalry and the hunter troops.

When steam locomotives and steamships are or were steam pipes used as a signal.

Whistles also serve as a toy instrument for children.
