The Silbersee in Langenhagen near Hanover is a recreational and swimming lake .

location and size

The lake is located in the southeastern area of the municipality north of the federal motorway 2 (BAB 2) and south of the highway 382 (L 382). The water area covers around 6.8 hectares. Directly adjacent in the north-west of the lake is the Paracelsus-Klinik am Silbersee , formerly the Silbersee-Klinik, which is located directly on the property of the former communal bathing establishment.

history

Bathing beach on the lake

The Silbersee was created between 1934 and 1935 when the Hanover-Magdeburg-Berlin motorway was being built; The opening of this route No. 6 took place on January 10, 1936. The lake is usually 10 meters deep, at its deepest point about 15 meters. The name comes from the vernacular and is related to the nearby Hannover-Langenhagen Airport . Because of the heavy air traffic over the lake, the water is said to have shone silver. The quarry pond was converted into a communal bathing establishment with a swimming pool and diving tower in the 1950s; it was fenced in and there was an admission fee to use during the season. On the west bank was the Silbersee restaurant, which was also used by the citizens of Langenhagen for family celebrations out of season.

The ticket booths were later removed and the Silbersee was handed over to the care of the German Life Saving Society (DLRG). The DLRG has a guard station on the west bank with an observation tower that used to be located at the Hanover traffic junction Aegi. The lifeguards watch over the safety of bathers on weekends and in good weather as well as during school holidays. Between 2003 and 2008, the DLRG saved 16 people from drowning.

Since the 1980s, playground equipment, a mini golf course and a restaurant and a kiosk with a beer garden and toilet facilities have been added. The use as a bathing lake was supported by the delimitation of large shallow water zones with three adjacent sandy beaches and sunbathing areas.

The relatively poor water quality with strong algae growth and problems with blue-green algae and cercariae of the Silver Lake, which had previously become known, were no longer detected in the measurements in summer 2012. The classification of the bathing water quality has resulted in very good values almost consistently since 1991 according to the applicable European guidelines.

With its fenced-in dog beach on the southern bank and because of its low level of blue-green algae, the lake is particularly popular among dog owners.
