Sillem Island is an uninhabited island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut . It is the second largest and second highest of the many hundred islands after Bylot Island , which lie just off the rugged northeast coast of Baffin Island .
geography
Sillem Island lies deep in Scott Inlet , at the exit of which into the open sea of Baffin Bay there is another island with Scott Island . Sillem Island is enclosed to the northwest by the Clark Fiord and southeast by the Gibbs Fiord. The ground plan of the island is reminiscent of a flattened pentagon , the longest diagonal of which is almost 35 km. In front of the south-western cape there is an approximately one square kilometer large rocky ridge. The coast of Sillem Island is rugged and steep. The island's glaciated interior reaches a height of up to 1640 m. It is the eighth highest island in Canada. Most of the outlet glaciers of the ice cap flow in a north-westerly direction into the Clark Fiord. In the southwest of the island, at an altitude of 730 m, is a 2.5 kilometers long and one kilometer wide glacial lake , which also drains into the Clark Fiord.
