Silmet is an Estonian manufacturer of pure niobium , tantalum and rare earths . Liquid-liquid extraction with nitric acid is used as the manufacturing process .
history
The Silmet company goes back to an oil shale factory built in 1927 . In the Soviet Union, the plant was dedicated to uranium enrichment . From 1970 niobium, tantalum and rare earths were processed. As a raw material are loparite -concentrates from the operation Sewredmet on the peninsula Kola ( Lovozero tundra ) processes.
In 2011 the company was taken over by the American company Molycorp . In June 2015, a major fire severely damaged the production halls.
