The Lowosero Tundra ( Russian Ловозерские тундры , German transcription: Lowosjorskije tundry ) is a mountain range between the two lakes Lowosero in the east and Umbosero in the west in the center of the Kola Peninsula in the Murmansk Oblast in Russia . The name comes from the lake of the same name. The region is also called Lowosjorskije . The Lowosero Tundra is a horseshoe-shaped mountain ridge that opens to the east and encloses the Seidosero Lake. Mainly spruce and pine trees grow on the mountain slopes. The mountains reach their highest point in the Angwundastschorr mountain at 1120  m . The area around Lake Seidosero is inhabited by Sami . Many place names are of non-Russian origin.

geology

The mountain range is located above a complex of agpaitic and hyperagpaitic rocks. These contain minerals such as eudialyte , loparite (an ore made from niobium and tantalum ), natrosilite ( anhydrous sodium silicate ) and others. At least 105 minerals have been found in the area, 39 of which were first discovered here ( type locality ). The few other regions with comparable geology and mineralogy are the neighboring Chibinen (located west of Umbosero Lake), the Ilimaussaq - Intrusion in the southwest of Greenland and Mont Saint-Hilaire in the eastern Canadian region of Montérégie .

tourism

The area is relatively easy to reach from the railway line. In winter the region can be reached from the Chibinen via the frozen Umbosero Lake, in summer mountain roads and hiking trails lead there.
