Silon

Silon is the trade name of a synthetic fiber that belongs to the polyamides and was produced in Czechoslovakia . The synthetic fiber was invented by Otto Wichterle during the Second World War . Wichterle is also considered to be the inventor of modern contact lenses .

As an employee of the Baťa company in Zlín, Wichterle researched polyamides and caprolactams and in 1941 invented a synthetic fiber that he called Silon. This synthetic fiber was used in the former Czechoslovakia as a substitute for nylon in the production of the first seamless stockings and tights for women. Today this fiber is no longer produced.
