Simeon ben Gamaliel I.
Rabban Simeon ben Gamaliel I. (also: Simon ben Gamliel I. etc.) was a Tannaite of the first generation in the first century AD, worked at the time of the Jewish War and, according to Josephus, was a “man full of insight and understanding”, but was in opposition to Josephus. He is counted among the Ten Martyrs who were killed under Emperor Hadrian .
He was Hillel's great-grandson and about 50 chairman of the Synhedrion . As a leader of the Pharisees , he was a driving force in the revolt against the Romans, during which he is believed to have died or fell.
In the sayings of the fathers (I., 17) he praises above all the virtue of silence.
