Musical career

As the son of a band leader, he came into contact with various musical trends early on, especially folk music, jazz, avant-garde rock and punk. In 1978 he joined the new wave band Scritti Politti , and 2 years later he founded the band Weekend with Alison Statton and Spike ; he changed his name to Simon Booth and kept this pseudonym until Afro Celt Sound System was founded. Later the band Working Week emerged from it. Other activities included a contribution as a guest musician on the debut album Eden by the duo Everything but the Girl and the activity as a producer of albums for Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango .

In 1995 Emmerson was nominated for a Grammy for his production of Baaba Maal's album Firin 'in Fouta . The founding idea for Afro Celt Sound System , whose debut album Sound Magic was released in 1996, arose from the collaboration with the renowned Senegalese singer and his band . In 2015, Emmerson initiated the group's split while on tour.

In 2004 he founded the folk music formation The Imagined Village , which he initially managed through Real World Studios , but transferred to his own label ECC in 2007, which he founded with the managing director of Lush Cosmetics . The primary purpose of this label was meanwhile the marketing of relaxation music pieces that had been designed exclusively for cosmetic treatment in Lush shops.

Emmerson is a hobby ornithologist and sometimes incorporates recorded bird songs into pieces of music.
