Simon Thoumire

Simon Thoumire (* 1970 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish concertina player, composer and music producer.

Thoumire played the bagpipes in a boys brigade at the age of nine . He came to the concertina through a sister who was an accordion student of Chrissie Leatham . He performed in various folk clubs and became a member of the Hopscotch Ceilidh Band . He became known as a member of the group Seannachie , which he joined in 1987 and with which he recorded two albums. In 1989 he won the Young Tradition Award from BBC Radio 2.

In 1990 Thoumire released his first solo album Hootz with guitarist Ian Carr . With Kevin MacKenzie and Brian Shiels he founded the Simon Thoumire Three , a group that combined traditional Scottish music with jazz and whose most successful album March, Strathspey, & Surreal was released in 1996.

With keyboardist Fergus MacKenzie , Thoumire recorded the album Exhibit A in 1995 , and the album Trip to Scotland was created in collaboration with the American folk group The Mollys . On the occasion of the first session of the Scottish Parliament , his Music for a New Scottish Parliament was premiered in the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow in 1999 . In 2000 the world premiere of his The Scottish Requiem took place.

In 1999 Thoumire founded the record label Tartan Records with the sub-label Foot Stompin 'Records , which u. a. Produced albums by Liz Doherty and The Fiddlesticks . The Scottish Traditional Music Trust followed in 2000 and Hands Up for Trad in 2003 . He also founded the traditional folk band Keep It Up . Since 2000 he has worked with the pianist David Milligan , with whom he has performed in Canada and at various festivals in Europe.
