Simon de Hesdin
Simon de Hesdin († 1383 ) was a member of the Order of St. John in France and worked as a translator of texts from antiquity into French.
Little is known of his life; in 1363 he became a doctor of theology and head of the House of St. John in Éterpigny in Picardy , and from 1377 of the house in Senlis near Paris.
In 1375 he began to translate the historical work Facta et dicta memorabilia by the Roman author Valerius Maximus , a history of the Roman Empire, on behalf of Charles V of France . This was then finished by Nicolas de Gonesse . The copies created from this translation were often very richly illustrated in the Middle Ages and show the fame and popularity of the translations by Simon de Hesdin. For example, a copy was made in Flanders around 1480 , painted in by the Flemish illuminator named with the white inscriptions and then exported to the court of the English King Edward IV .
