Simonas Daukantas (born October 26, 1793 in Kalviai , Skuodas district ; † December 6, 1864 in Papilė , Akmenė district ) was a Lithuanian historian, writer and one of the first Lithuanian ideologues and language cleaners in the 19th century. He contributed to the restoration of the Lithuanian language by replacing the Polish roots, which the Lithuanian language had increasingly adopted since the 17th century.

Life

Daukantas grew up in the family of a forest ranger. The mother was buried in the Lenkimai cemetery.

Simonas studied at the Kretinga elementary school and at the Žemaičių Kalvarija school , in the Vilnius grammar school . In 1822 he graduated from the Vilniaus universitetas , but because of the court proceedings of filomats and filarets he did not get his master's degree until 1825. After that he lived in Riga , where he worked in the office of the Governor General of Riga ( Latvia ). From 1835 he was an official in the Senate in Saint Petersburg . In 1846 he published a collection of Lithuanian folk songs.
