Simulcrypt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With simulcrypt which is encryption of a digital data stream referred to by two or more different types of decoders again decrypted can be.

The technical implementation takes place either through the use of different keys or through the simultaneous dissemination of the data stream, each coded with the various encryption methods.

The term Simulcrypt is mainly used in the field of pay-TV . Simulcrypt makes it possible to supply users with different types of decoders at the same time, without the viewer having to purchase two different decoders.

Simulcrypt is implemented in the operator's transmission center using an encryption unit ( scrambler ) to which several access authorization systems are linked via the DVB Simulcrypt protocol . Before a control word change, the new control word is sent to all connected access authorization systems, which then generate their proprietary Entitlement Control Messages (ECMs) and return them to the encryption unit. As soon as the ECMs from all access authorization systems have arrived, the encryption unit inserts the ECMs into the transport stream and shortly thereafter performs the key change using the new control word.

Simulcrypt is often used when a pay TV operator plans to change their conditional access system. For a transitional period, for example until all decoders in the old system have been replaced, the operator sends his program encrypted under both systems. The DVB-Simulcrypt protocol has established itself as the standard interface between the access authorization system and the encryption unit.

An alternative to Simulcrypt is the use of a common interface decoder.

In contrast to Simulcrypt, the Multicrypt process is where two fundamentally different types of encryption can be decrypted with one receiver (e.g. subscription to two fundamentally different Pay TV offers).

example

  • In 2009, Kabel Deutschland announced that it would encrypt with NDS VideoGuard in addition to Nagravision .
  • The cable network operator Tele Columbus has been encrypting its TV packages with NDS Videoguard and, until further notice, with Conax since 2008 .
  • From December 2007 to May 2008, pay TV stations in the network of the cable operator Kabel BW were encrypted in both Nagravision and NDS-Videoguard .
  • Since April 2003 the sends ORF its digital TV channels over the satellite Astra encrypted in Cryptoworks supported while also Betacrypt -Dekoder (this support was only maintained until 2008).
