The Sinar Photography AG is a Swiss manufacturer of professional cameras , based in Zurich .

The company goes back to the photo studio of Carl August Koch . His son Hans Carl expanded the studio from 1911 to include a photo shop. After his untimely death, his widow took over the business and in 1947 transferred it to his son Carl Hans Koch , who was a qualified photographer and photo dealer. Out of dissatisfaction with the large format cameras of the time , he developed a modular camera and received the first patents for his Sinar camera in 1947. The modular and standardized construction then led to the name of the first Sinar in 1948, the “Sinar Norma”. In 1968 the son Hans-Carl joined the family stock corporation , and production moved to Feuerthalen .

In November 2004 a cooperation in the field of digital camera backs began with Jenoptik , which in September 2005 led to a 51 percent stake. The remaining 49% remained in family ownership. In April 2007 Jenoptik also took over this 49% of the shares and is therefore the sole owner.

On October 1, 2009, Zurich-based Sinar Photography AG, which emerged from Tekno AG , took over the areas of development, sales, service and support for Sinar AG products . On January 1, 2011, all product and trademark rights to Sinar were transferred to Sinar Photography AG . Both the production and the warehouse are managed from Zurich regardless of the previous connections with partners and suppliers and the previous location. The former company Sinar AG in Feuerthalen was dissolved at the end of 2011.

Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, took over 100% of Sinar Photography AG, Zurich, at the end of 2013. Sinar's marketing, product management, support, development and production will remain in Switzerland.
