The Singing Trees ( Finnish Laulupuut ) are a sculpture in Helsinki in Finland .

location

It is located south of the Musiikkitalo concert hall in downtown Helsinki, east of Mannerheimintie Street .

Design and history

The sculpture was created from steel and aluminum by the sculptor Reijo Hukkanen and installed in August 2012. It is up to 13 meters high, 6 meters wide and 9 meters deep and shows, among other things, a standing pike.

Hukkanen came up with the idea of designing the sculpture based on a figure of an upright whale he bought as a souvenir in New York in 1991 . The work was inspired by the poem Hauen laulu by the poet Aaro Hellaakoski , in which a pike climbs a tree and sings, and the Finnish national epic Kalevala . The design of the concert hall is intended to incorporate the architecture of the concert hall as well as the surrounding landscape. The sculpture should awaken the joy of life.
