Rustavier Sioni Church

The Church of the Assumption in Rustavi ( Georgia ყოვლადწმინდა ღვთისმშობლის მიძინების სახელობის ტაძარი ), better known as Rustawier Sioni Church ( Georgian რუსთავის სიონი ) is a Georgian Orthodox church in the Georgian town of Rustavi. It was built between 2000 and 2011. The design comes from Bessarion Menabde, Nikolos Abaschidze and Nikolos Dadiani; the construction work was directed by Temur Burkashvili.

The Rustavi Sioni Church was sanctified on August 27, 2011 by the Archbishop of Rustavi and Marneuli Ioane. The next day, August 28 and the Assumption of the Virgin of the Georgian Orthodox Church , the first solemn service was held in the new church.

Building

The church was built as a cross-domed church with three apses on the east side. The main body of the church is surrounded by a semicircular gallery. The church is 19 meters high. The architectural style of the Rustavier Sioni Church is based on the Georgian church buildings from the 11th to 12th centuries. It is similar to the churches in Nikorzminda , Kazchi and Bana (now in Turkey). The ornaments that adorn the walls also correspond to the medieval traditional Georgian ornaments from the various churches. The Rustavier Sioni Church is covered with stone slabs. The seismic zones are built into the walls and vaults, which was also characteristic of Georgian medieval architecture.

No modern technology was used in the construction of the Rustavier Sioni Church; only stone and mortar were used as building materials. The lime mortar was made with egg yolk according to the old custom. According to the architects, the strength of this traditional lime mortar will gradually increase and the building will last for centuries. Rustavier Sioni Church is the first Georgian church building in several centuries to be built according to traditional customs.

Construction work began in 2000. The stones from which the church is built come from the village of Nitschbissi near Mtskheta . This stone was also used in the construction of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Anchishati Church .
