Siphlonurus lacustris is a species of insect from the order of the mayflies (Ephemeroptera).

Characteristics of the larva

The body is brownish yellow in color with dark markings, not flattened, slender and up to 13 millimeters long. The head is perpendicular in relation to the body axis. The eyes are on the side of the head. The antennae are only slightly longer than the head is wide. The short mandibles do not protrude beyond the front edge of the head. There are spines on the side of the last segments of the abdomen . The terminal thread is hairy on both sides, but the cerci only on the inside. In its second third, all tail threads are darkly colored. The tracheal gills are leaf-shaped. The first two pairs are double, the other five are just single.

Occurrence and way of life

The larvae live all over Europe in the plains and in the mountains in larger rivers with rich vegetation. You move almost only by swimming. Their food is plant-based, possibly also animal-based. The generation period is one year. Subimagines live 2 or 3 days, adults 4 or 5. The flight time of the adults is from May to August.
