Knight Kuno and the maiden

The Skála smrti (German dead stone , also Jungfernsprung ) is an approx. 15 meter high rock, in the vertical wall of which a remarkable rock relief was carved. It shows a knight on a rearing horse and a woman falling from a rock with outspread arms.

Location and access

Zwittebach am Totenstein

The rock is located approx. 1.5 km south of the village Kunratice u Cvikova (German: Kunnersdorf bei Zwickau ) in the Lusatian Mountains in Liberecký kraj (Liberec region) in the Czech Republic . The Svitávka brook ( Zwittebach ) has dug its way into the sandstone here and created a rocky landscape that was also called Kunnersdorfer Schweiz . The relief can be found somewhat hidden by trees on the north bank of the stream. It can only be reached on foot. The access to the marked path is at the southern crossing under the Svitávka brook on the southern edge of Kunratice u Cvikova . From here about 700 meters are to be covered. You pass some tunnels and caves carved into the rock, the largest of which is said to have been used for the extraction of sand for the local mirror grinding shop. It is accessible.

history

The place on the Zwittebach, which was also called Müllerloch , was known for its beauty even earlier . The relief was created in 1910 by two Kunnersdorfer residents, the retired ku k. Gendarmerie sergeant Karl Bundesmann and the senior teacher i. R. Karl Beckert. The two later also created the grain relief on Dutý kámen ( hollow stone ).

presentation

The relief shows the knight Kuno jumping into the depths of a maiden who is already in the fall . The local saga of Totenstein served as a template for this scene .

The legend tells that the owner of the fortress above the village, Knight Kuno, chased the beautiful miller's daughter. The summit met the Knights when she returned home from a visit with their grandparents. To protect her virginity, she flees into the nearby forest and suddenly stands before the abyss. In her fear she chooses death and jumps into the depths. However, she was miraculously saved because her skirt acted like a parachute or because she was carried by angels. The knight fared worse, he and his horse were killed.

"... And see an angel spreading softly
To the pious woman the wings out
He manages the jump miraculously
And she'll soon be home happy.
Mr. Kunz buries his horse in the event
A wild curse - his last call!
You can see the claw on the death stone
From the hand of the devil - from the horse's hoof ... "
