Burn is the eighth studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple . It was released in 1974 and was the first album with the new Mk III line-up , which also first featured singer David Coverdale.

background

Even before the album Burn was recorded , the line-up had changed: singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover were replaced by David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes . The new members added to the previous influences from blues and classical music - even more subtle than on the two following albums - soul and funk as style-defining elements. This is even more noticeable on the following album Stormbringer . In addition, Jon Lord now renounced the use of a Marshall guitar amplifier . Instead, he used Leslies again to reinforce his Hammond organ . He also used synthesizers for the first time on this album .

In order to promote the sales of the musically newly inspired album, the record company Burn appealed to the music magazine Billboard with the statement that it was the top album Artists of the Year in the USA . Just over a month after its release, the band received the gold record for 500,000 albums sold in the US. The album made other gold records in Great Britain, France and Argentina. Burn reached position 1 in the album charts in Austria, Germany and Norway. The title song Burn and the song Mistreated were particularly successful. Both pieces were last performed live by Deep Purple in 1991.
