Varhany (organ pipe stone)

The Dutý kámen (German hollow stone ) is a smaller, 350 to 379 meter high, wooded mountain ridge in the Lusatian Mountains in Liberecký kraj (Liberec region) in the Czech Republic . Because of its interesting geology, the area is under nature protection. The ridge owes its name to a cave at the foot of the lookout rocks. This cave, popularly also known as the bell (Zvon) , the owl stone (Soví hlava) or the knight (Rytíř) , but mostly hollow stone, gave the entire ridge its name.

Location and surroundings

The Dutý kámen is located 200 meters south of the E442 trunk road near Drnovec (Kleingrün) between Kunratice (Kunnersdorf) and Cvikov (Zwickau i. B.). A green marked hiking trail leads from the road up to the ridge. The "Zwickau pond" (Cvikovský rybník) is located nearby .

history

The Dutý kámen has been used as a quarry since the 19th century . Above all, the sandstone pillars obtained were used in decorative gardens and parks. Numerous Trinity and Plague columns in the area are decorated with it. From the eastern slope of the ridge there were larger quarries, which are still clearly visible.

The southern sections of the sandstone cliffs were opened up for tourism in 1913 and 1914 by members of the Kunnersdorf Mountain Association.

If you follow the path from the road, you will first come to the Karolínin odpočinek , a stone bench carved into the rock. The “Karolinenruh” lettering, damaged by modern incisions, can still be seen in the backrest. A little further on is the “Fan” (Vějíř) , a columnar sandstone formation that was created by rising volcanic gases.

Above is a relief of the poet Theodor Körner carved into the vertical quarry walls . It was created on the centenary of Körner's death in 1913 by senior teacher Karl Beckert and gendarmerie sergeant Karl Bundesmann, two artists and members of the mountain association for northernmost Bohemia in Kunnersdorf. A memorial plaque installed in the rock face in April 2005 continues the tradition.

Behind it, there is a climb to the summit of the “Broad Stone” (Široký kámen) via 38 steps carved into the rock . Above is an eroded stone table that used to contain an astronomical-geographical orientation table and a sundial.

geology

At Dutý kámen, the Cretaceous sandstones of northern Bohemia came into contact with an underlying volcanic magma . The lower sandstone layers in particular were subjected to a transformation through pressure and heat. The emergence of small five- to six-sided sandstone pillars, which were created by the subsequent cooling of the sandstone, is remarkable. Similar formations are also known from the natural monument Jonsdorf organ in the millstone quarries in the Zittau Mountains and from Hochhübel in Saxon Switzerland .

Mountain sports

Climbing was probably already practiced on the larger rocks before the Second World War . In addition to a few smaller climbing peaks, there are also two more important climbing destinations, the Bürgsteiner Nadel (Sloupská Jehla) and the Lochstein (Děravec). The Bürgsteiner Nadel is considered to be the hardest climbing peak in the Lusatian Mountains and was first climbed in 1974 (Alter Weg VIIIa ). Climbing is currently prohibited on the Lochstein. The so-called yellow wall (Žlutá stěna), which is due to iron oxides, is remarkable because of its color .
