Skanda is viewed as a consecrated guardian of the Dharma and a Bodhisattva in Chinese Buddhism . He is one of the twenty-four heavenly watchers . Skanda is the head of these twenty-three heavenly guardians. He serves the four kings of heaven .

Most Chinese temples have an image of Skanda next to a Guanyin or Buddha image . He is to the left of the picture. Sangharama's image is then to the right of the Guanyin or Buddha image.

In Chinese sutras there is an illustration of Skanda at the end of the sutra. He reminds people that Skanda protects and preserves Buddhist teachings.

According to legends, Skanda was the son of a virtuous king who believed deeply in Buddhist teachings . As Gautama Buddha , the Nirvana attained, Skanda was commissioned the Dharma to protect. Skanda had to protect the members of the sangha when they were disturbed by a mara . Skanda also resolved conflicts between members of the Sangha.

A few days after the Buddha's death and cremation, evil demons came to steal Gautama's relics. Skanda immediately intervened, chased away the demons and brought back the relics.
