The Nordic countries

The Scandinavian Defense Alliance was a defense alliance between the states of Denmark , Norway , Sweden and Finland discussed among the Nordic countries after the Second World War . The background was the experiences of the Second World War .

The Nordic countries Denmark and Norway, which have traditionally remained neutral , were occupied by Nazi Germany , while Finland saw itself threatened by the Soviet Union in the conflict over Karelia . Sweden was the only Nordic country not directly affected by the war. An intergovernmental working group was set up to initiate the alliance.

The idea of a Nordic defense alliance was soon abandoned for various reasons. On the one hand, there was an insoluble conflict between Norway, which wanted to open up to the West, and Sweden, which insisted on complete neutrality. Ultimately, Norway and Denmark decided to join the western defense alliance NATO . The remaining Sweden kept a neutral position.
