The family Skeritt is one of those originally Anglo - or Cambro-Norman families that the Tribes of Galway ( English Tribes of Galway ) are called, and for centuries the city and region in the Irish County Galway dominated.

Under Richard de Burgh (1194–1243) the family came to land in Connacht . The ancestors of the Skeritt, named Huscared, have been in the area since 1242 and owned in County Clare and Ballinduff, Drungriffin, and Nutgrove. They derive their ancestry from an English family. Roger Huscared or Scared is mentioned as a judge in Dugdale. In the 14th century they became one of the 14 powerful families in Galway City .

Walter Huscared and his wife Johanna are listed among the main patrons of the Athenry monastery . Her son Richard Skeret is attested in a leading position in the city of Galway in 1378. He owned properties in Ardfry, Mearuidhe and lands in Claregalway , where he ceded a piece of land to build the monastery .

Some of these lands are still owned by his descendants. Family members live in Ballinduff, Carnacrow, Drumgriflin, and Nutgrove in County Galway and Finvarra and Funchien in County Clare.

A roundabout in Galway is named after the family.
