SkiFree

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SkiFree is a computer game from 1991. The aim of the game is to ski down a seemingly endless slope and to avoid obstacles. Graphics and controls are on a simple level. It was written by Chris Pirih , who was working as a programmer at Microsoft at the time . It is currently released as freeware , but Microsoft still owns the rights.

Gameplay

The player can choose from four modes:

  • Freestyle course (collect as many style points as possible)
  • Slalom course (race on time)
  • Tree slalom (time race for trees)
  • not to enter a course (free travel)

The game can be operated in three ways:

  • with the mouse
  • with the control buttons
  • using the numeric keypad

If the player has reached the goal, the game is not over. He can continue until he is followed by a snowman after 2000 meters . If the snowman catches the skier, he will eat him immediately. The starting position is reached again after another 2000 meters.

history

Pirih developed SkiFree to get used to C and to create a graphical version of the old VAX / VMS ski game for VT100 terminals. The game was discovered when the head of programming for Microsoft Entertainment Pack Pirih was watching the game. The game was then included in the next Entertainment Pack (Version 3) (later also in the Best of Windows Entertainment Pack ).

It is available as a ported version for the Macintosh.

In 1993 Pirih started work on a second part, which he gave up in favor of other projects, and he also lost the source code. On April 4, 2005, he announced the rediscovery of the code and developed a 32-bit version of SkiFree , which can be downloaded for free.

System requirements

SkiFree also runs on a 286 with a CGA graphics card, but it was aimed at the faster 386 with a VGA graphics card. The operating system required is at least Windows 3.0 .

Since the original SkiFree is a 16-bit program, compatibility problems often arise on 32-bit systems . Therefore, in April 2005 a 32-bit version (version 1.03) of SkiFree was published. Version 1.04 is currently available (from October 2, 2005). This version is significantly more resource-efficient and also runs on 64-bit CPUs.

Implementations

GnuSki is a text-based SkiFree clone that is under GPL and was developed in C ++ ( Cygwin ). It is currently in version 0.50b (from March 3, 2002) and some features are still missing (monsters, timers, options). There is a version for the PSP and one for the TI-92 calculator .
