The Hesselbacher ski area , also called Alpincenter Wittgenstein , is a winter sports area in the Rothaargebirge near Hesselbach in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Siegen-Wittgenstein ( Germany ).

The ski area is operated by the Oberes Banfetal e. V. operated entirely on a voluntary basis. It is also called the "Hesselbach Glacier". The name became common when the first attempts at artificial snow-making began to produce an ice cover.

Geographical location

The ski area is 1.2 km west of Hesselbach and 1.2 km north of Fischelbach , two south-eastern districts of Bad Laasphe . It is located on the northern flank of the Großer Bohnstein mountain ( 500.5  m above sea  level ). The Hesselbacher Gletscher car park is located at the valley station at Kreisstraße 36 (Hesselbacher Straße) .

history

The history of the ski area began in 1967 with the purchase of a portable lift and the creation of the first ski slope in 1971. A ski hut was inaugurated in 1982 and the first snow cannon was set up in 1983. Another ski slope was created in 1996 through forest clearing. In 2002, an anchor lift created a transport capacity of 900 people per hour. More snow cannons were purchased mainly in the 2000s. As of February 2017, there were eleven snow cannons.

description

In the ski area there is an anchor lift and a snow-covered ski slope with a floodlight system and, since 2000, a newer slope without lighting and snowmaking. In addition, a previous drag lift has been restored and a small practice slope created for beginners. Volunteers of the sports club Oberes Banfetal e. V. take over the lift and hut service. The slopes are each about 400 meters long. The entire western slope is covered with snow with snow cannons if there is not enough snow. To do this, water is taken from the Hesselbach. There is a ski hut on the middle level .

Events

There is a free ski school in the ski area. In the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons, over 100 children learned to ski on this slope, in the 2016/2017 season it was around 70. For young skiers, ski races such as the “Reifen-Ritter-Cup” are held. The police hold an annual "police championship". All employees and officers of the police of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are entitled to participate.

In the warm season, the FlyART flight school uses the main slope of the ski area for paragliding because of the steep slope .
