The Große Bohnstein is 500.5  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Rothaargebirge in the district of Hesselbach in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Siegen-Wittgenstein .

The Große Bohnstein rises in the south of the Rothaargebirge and in the southeast of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Its summit is about 1.2 km west-southwest of Hesselbach and 1000 m north of Fischelbach , two districts of Bad Laasphe. West flows past in the local headwaters area also Fischelbach called Banfe , in the northwest of the mountain the north running Hesselbach flows.

Natural allocation

The Große Bohnstein belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) and in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) to the subunit Südwittgensteiner Bergland ( Wittgensteiner Lahnbergland ; 333.2).

Mountain height

The Große Bohnstein is 500.5 m high as part of its western summit  . In the German basemap , several height details are entered on its summit region: 498.8  m (on the west knoll ) and 497.6 m (on the east knoll  ). In between is a 494.7  m high saddle with a 495.2  m high point.

On the western flank of the Großer Bohnstein lies the Großer Bohnstein nature reserve ( CDDA no. 163349; designated 1986; 4.53  hectares in size). Particularly worthy of protection is the steep slope above the Banfe, which flows on the mountain at a height of about 405  m a patchy sessile oak forest grows, is taken. Southern parts of the nature reserve are designated as the fauna-flora-habitat area Großer Bohnstein (FFH no. 5116-307; 1.86 ha). Parts of the Bad Laasphe landscape protection area are located on the mountain (CDDA no. 390391; 1987; 113.3714  km² ).

Transport and leisure

To the west past the Großer Bohnstein leads between Fischelbach in the south and Banfe in the north along the Banfe the state road 718 , from which the district road 36, which runs to Hesselbach , branches off northwest of the mountain near the confluence of the Hesselbach in the Banfe . On the northern flank of the mountain there is a ski lift with two slopes as part of the Hesselbach ski area . In the warm season, the FlyART flight school uses the slopes of the ski area for paragliding .

Planned wind turbines

In September 2014, plans for the construction of three wind turbines on the mountain were announced. The Siegen-Wittgenstein district has postponed the decision for the time being.
