The Skihist Provincial Park is a provincial park in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The 386-acre park is eight kilometers east of Lytton on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District . The park is named after the 2968  m high Skihist Mountain , although it is not in the park, but on the north bank of the Thompson River .

investment

The park is located on the south bank in the narrow valley of the Thompson River, which has cut deeply into the landscape here. A railway line runs along both banks of the river, and the Trans-Canada Highway runs along the southern bank, dividing the park into a small picnic area on the river bank and the campground on the hillside.
The park is a category II protected area ( national park ).

history

In the park is a section of the Cariboo Road (also called Cariboo Wagon Road or Great North Road , which now follows Highway 97 ), built between 1862 and 1865 , which led from Yale to the gold mines in the Cariboo Mountains . The park was established on March 16, 1956 as a 33-acre campsite for travelers on the Trans-Canada Highway. Since this section of the highway lost its importance due to the Coquihalla Highway built in the 1980s and the campsite itself no longer met modern standards, the campsite was modernized and the area of the park increased to 386 hectares on May 19, 2010. The aim of the park for campers who Rafting wish to pursue operate on the Thompson River, fishing or other recreational activities, become more attractive.

Flora and fauna

The park is located in the dry, warm and low-precipitation interior of British Columbia. The park is mainly forested with yellow pines . A herd of elk live in the region , and bighorn sheep and black bears can be found in the mountains . The park is an excellent place for bird watching, according to the park administration there are 29 species of birds in the park area.

activities

The campsite has 58 spaces for campers and tents and has simple sanitary facilities. Two hiking trails with a total length of eight kilometers start from the campsite, one of which leads to a lookout point, while the other is a circular route.
