Mangaweka is a settlement in the Rangitikei District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located approximately 62 km north-northeast of Palmerston North on the Rangitikei River . The New Zealand State Highway 1 and the former railway line of the North Island Main Trunk Railway run through the settlement .

history

The settlement was once a railway settlement and is known for the 288 m long railway viaduct northeast of the settlement and its tunnel south of the settlement. The viaduct was once the longest of its kind in New Zealand. The route has not been used since 1981.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 150 inhabitants, 15.3% fewer than in the 2006 census.

Attractions

In addition to shops with handicrafts, there is a café with a Douglas DC-3 on display and St. Patrick's Church .

tourism

In addition to rafting , fishing and hikes along the railway line of the former North Island Main Trunk Railway with its tunnels, zip lines and bungee jumping are offered at Papa Cliffs on the Rangitikei River .

Every year in October or November, the settlement is the site of the controversial “ Fakes & Forgeries Art Exhibition and Festival ”.
