Skippers Segeln & Ozean (French title: Skippers, voile & océan ) is a Swiss sailing magazine. It was first published in 2001, making it the oldest still active nautical magazine in Switzerland.

The quarterly magazine with a circulation of 20,000 copies appears in German and French and is available at Swiss kiosks at a retail price of 14 francs as well as by subscription. Since 2015, Skippers has also published the annual special issue Skippers Motor on motor boats and since 2018 the special issue Skippers Travel on luxury travel.

history

Skippers was launched in 2001 on the initiative of Brice Lechevalier . With his magazine devoted entirely to sailing, he wanted to close a gap in the Swiss media landscape. Thanks to its high-quality appearance with the best image, layout and print quality, Skippers immediately stood out from the rest of the European trade press. Its beginnings coincided with the creation of the Alinghi Syndicate's America's Cup project, which ushered in a trend reversal in Swiss sailing. Skippers was an important witness and actor of these euphoric years.

The Alinghi years

For the first edition, Brice Lechevalier interviewed Ernesto Bertarelli , who later brought the silver jug back to Europe, but was not as well known then as it is today. During the detailed conversation it quickly became apparent that the two are on the same wavelength. It should be the beginning of a long collaboration between Skippers and the Alinghi team . In 2005, 2006 and 2007, ahead of the 32nd America's Cup , Skippers was responsible for the official Alinghi guide, which was published in four languages and had a circulation of 100,000 copies. At the same time, Skippers entered into a partnership with the regatta tour of the D35 catamarans, which was co-founded by Alinghi and heralded the boom in multihulls, and from 2004 brought out a special edition on "Formula 1 boats". In these successful sailing years, Skippers established itself sustainably in the nautical scene in Switzerland. In 2009 the magazine reached another milestone in its history.

The alliance with Swiss Sailing

In 2009, Skippers established itself as the leading medium in the sailing community in German and French-speaking Switzerland. The Swiss sailing association Swiss Sailing was looking for a way to better reach its members. Skippers suggested to the then President Roger Staub to publish pages on current events at Swiss Sailing in every issue and to send Skippers to all active members in return. Since this partnership was sealed, Skippers and the association have joined forces to promote the sport of sailing. With this in mind, in 2008 they launched the SUI Sailing Awards. They honor the best sailors of the two previous years and highlight the variety of projects and the quality of the athletes under the Swiss flag. This lasting alliance still ensures that debates in the sailing community continue to be constructive.

Skippers today

In 2016, Skippers expanded its online activities. Since then, the magazine has published weekly news on its website, which it disseminates via the newsletter that it has created jointly with Swiss Sailing. At the same time, Skippers is active on social media.

Skippers not only reports on current events, but also contributes significantly to a lively sailing scene by supporting numerous events.

Skippers is also the media partner of the largest European boat shows in Paris, Monaco, Cannes, La Rochelle, La Grande Motte and Düsseldorf. In Switzerland, Skippers is a partner of SuisseNautic and participates in the organization of the Salon nautique du Léman in Geneva, for which it publishes the official trade fair guide every year.

Since 20014, Skippers has dedicated 32 pages to the D35 regatta tour every year, addressing current topics relating to the boat class, sailors, regulations and the various events of the current season. On every occasion of the D35 Trophy, the D35 special edition is distributed to the guests of the sponsors and to the visitors.

Skippers Motor is a co-founder of the Concours d'élégance in Cannes . At this competition on the fringes of the Cannes Yachting Festival, the most beautiful classic and modern motor boats are awarded.

Sailing Awards

The SUI Swiss Sailing Awards have been presented to the greatest Swiss sailing talents every two years since 2008. The who's who of the Swiss sailing scene comes together on this prestigious occasion.
