Skull House by Moville

The Skull House of Moville (German skull house ) in the cemetery of Cooley (also Cooly) near Moville is located above Lough Foyle in County Donegal in Ireland .

The dry masonry building is 8.5 × 6.5 meters in size (external dimensions). The building may have served as an oratorio , but the low access does not match other oratorios in the region. It was also considered an ancient tomb for the local saints as human remains have been found. Possible is St. Finian , the patron saint of Moville.

The area was the location of a monastery called Maghbhile , which is said to have been a prestigious school on Inishowen in the 6th century, but has disappeared.

The location was chosen like other early Christian sites because there was likely a pagan cult site here.

In front of the cemetery is the approximately 3.0 meter high Cooley Cross , one of the earliest examples of a Celtic cross .
